The Inspiration
The Manja Pai a bright yellow bag embedded in everyday South Indian life established a simple system of carrying and safekeeping. Seen across markets, streets, and homes, it has long existed as a purely functional object, defined by its ease and visibility.
This version builds on that familiarity.
Layered onto it is a second language: stamps. Marks that travel, collect, and record. Here, they appear as a series of small impressions drawn from everyday South Indian motifs, fragments that feel both personal and widely recognised.
Together, form and surface bring two ideas into one: a traditional carry object and a collection of visual memory.
The Process
Crafted in cotton, each Manja Pai tote is hand-stitched by women artisans in South India, with attention to durability, finish, and everyday use. Produced in small quantities, the process remains deliberate, allowing each piece to retain its own character.
The surface is treated as a field of collected impressions. Stamp-like motifs are placed across the bag, transforming it from a functional cotton tote into something more archival an object to be used, revisited, and recognised over time.
Designed by Madras Finds, this Manja Pai brings together material, memory, and form where everyday utility meets a considered approach to design.
