The Pattern
Athangudi tiles are a distinctive craft of Chettinad, known for their bold colours, precise geometry and intricate, repeating patterns. Made by hand, their designs bring together grids, florals, curves and geometric forms in playful compositions that are vibrant, whimsical and full of character.
The Process
For the journal, we wanted to celebrate the diversity of Athangudi patterns without overwhelming their inherent character. We brought together distinct tile motifs, allowing their geometry and colour to take centre stage against a minimal canvas. The result is a considered interpretation of Athangudi - paired back in its presentation, but rich in pattern, colour and detail.
