Madras checks are a distinctive textile language, recognised for their intersecting lines and spirited interplay of colour. Rooted in the textile history of South India, the pattern has travelled across generations and geographies.
Korai pai, woven from the korai grass native to Tamil Nadu, is a familiar part of the region’s material heritage, valued for its distinctive texture and intricate weave.
The Process
For this box, we paired the natural texture of a korai pai base with a Madras checks fabric lid, bringing two familiar South Indian design elements together in an unexpected form. The distinctive colour combination lends the classic checks a fresh expression, with a festive sensibility that feels both bold and considered. The contrast between the woven base and patterned lid gives the box its character, celebrating the meeting of texture, colour and craft in a functional keepsake.
