The Hansa is our interpretation of this form, carved in the shape of the swan, the Hansa of classical Indian tradition. Feminine, unhurried, certain of herself. The fourteen cavities run along her body the way they always have on every Pallanguzhi ever played, waiting to be filled, waiting to be emptied, waiting for someone to begin.
The Process
Pallanguzhi has been played on the floors of South Indian homes for centuries. This is our interpretation, carved in teak by hand, with minimal detailing that lets the grain and the form do the speaking. Teak was chosen for its weight, its warmth and its honesty, a wood that ages beautifully and asks for nothing in return.
This is artisan work. Each piece, made to order, will carry the small variations that come from being made by hand. That is not imperfection. That is the point.
